Youngstock management

Week 1

Introduction

Youngstock management is a crucial aspect of dairy farming that focuses on the care and development of calves and heifers from birth to the point of entering the milking herd. Proper youngstock management is fundamental for the future success and productivity of a dairy operation. During this critical phase, the emphasis is on ensuring optimal growth, health, and welfare of the young animals. From providing adequate nutrition and implementing sound health protocols to creating appropriate housing environments, youngstock management sets the foundation for a productive and sustainable dairy herd. Effective management during this developmental stage not only influences the overall well-being of the animals but also plays a significant role in maximizing the potential for future milk production. In this dynamic field, dairy farmers and managers must employ a holistic approach that combines scientific knowledge, technological advancements, and practical experience to raise healthy, productive youngstock that will contribute to the long-term success of the dairy enterprise.
